Who’s Your Perfect Golf Caddie? Jessica Alba, MJ, Tiger, a wild animal?

Wednesday, July 29th, 2009
Illama Golf (not in NC)

Illama Golf (not in NC)

All golfers have thought about who the perfect golf caddie would be.  Maybe it’s Charles Barkley for the humor of his swing, Tiger to drop 20 strokes a round, MJ for being around greatness, Warren Buffett to make a fortune trading on his tips, or maybe Jessica Alba for obvious reasons. What about a illama? Seriously, a golf course in Cedar Mountain, North Carolina recently enlisted the help of illamas to help carry golfer’s clubs. For $40, golfers can rent a illama for 9 rounds. It’s odd to say the least. It certainly begs the question, who cleans up the poop (from the illama not my swing)?

Mickelson to Play at WGC-Bridgestone

Tuesday, July 28th, 2009

Phil Mickelson will return to the PGA Tour next week at the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational to be played at Firestone C.C. in Ohio. This will be his first event since the U.S. Open last month where he tied for second.

Mickelson’s wife and mother were both recently diagnosed with breast cancer, prompting him to take time away from the tour to spend time with his family.

Ball Flights: Straight, Draw and Fade

Tuesday, July 28th, 2009

The first three ball flights have one thing in common, the club is headed straight down the target line. If you are standing behind the ball the target line is a straight line from your ball to the target. How your club impacts the ball in relation to this line is called path. This affects which direction the ball will travel. When one of the first three ball flights is employed the path is straight down the target line, or the club is moving straight toward the target at impact.

The top goal of every golfer is to hit the ball straight. Often times this is more luck than skill but it is important to understand what is happening to repeat it more often in the swing. The key is to get the club to travel straight down the target line and have a square club face at impact. This means that the club is moving towards the target and the club face is perpendicular to the target line when impact is made. When these are both done the result is a straight shot that never leaves the target.

While the straight shot is the most desired there is another shot that is far more common in the game of golf, the fade or slice. Most golfers that play the game recreationally hit this shot, even thought they may not know why. The fade is the result of the club moving straight down the path but with the club face being open at impact. This means that when the club comes into contact with ball the heel, or back of the club, is ahead of the toe. This makes the club head point to right at impact and imparts spin that causes the ball to curve to the right after starting at the target.

The last of the flights with the path heading down the target line is the draw. This is the exact opposite of the fade. When the club makes impact with the ball it is still traveling down the target line but the face is closed rather than open. The toe of the club is ahead of the heel at impact. This causes the ball to start at the target line and turn to the left because of the spin caused by the closed club face at impact.

In the following articles we will cover the final six ball flights. When a basic understanding of these is accomplished it will become much easier to understand the golf swing.

Learn to Control Ball Flight

Sunday, July 26th, 2009

There are nine common ball flights in golf. Understanding what they are and what causes them is the first step to using them when needed. Professional golfers have the ability to use these ball flights to their advantage while amateurs have little to no control over which will show up. This is what allows good golfers to hit the ball on the green out of the trees or around an obstacle.

The only thing in a golf swing that truly matters is impact. During this split second everything that will determine the shot is happening. Which way the club face is pointing, how fast it is traveling, and if the ball hits the sweet spot are just a couple factors. Understanding which factor causes the ball to go in different directions is a major step to playing better golf.

The nine balls flight and their causes will be covered in three following articles.

The Changing PGA Tour

Thursday, July 23rd, 2009

There is no doubt that there is a major change occurring throughout professional golf. Over the past several years golfers in their forties and fifties are not just competing but also winning golf tournaments. Kenny Perry lost the Master’s in a playoff to Angel Cabrera, had he won he would have become the oldest winner of a major. Tom Watson had a similar fate at this years British Open.

The fact is that there is a major power shift happening on tour. Since Tiger Woods came on tour there has not been another young golfer that has won on a consistent basis. It has been the veterans that have been dominating the tour year after year. This trend seems to be growing stronger and stronger. Tom Watson won his first major is 1975 and nearly won last week at the Open Championship. This kind of longevity cannot be found or expected in any other professional sport. While we are waiting for a young golfer to follow in Tiger’s footsteps it is the Champions Tour that is bringing the most contenders to the field.

Golf Tips – How to Play Golf In the Wind

Thursday, July 16th, 2009

The world’s best golfers are at Turnberry in Scotland for the British Open and there is no doubt that wind will be a factor. Playing  in the wind is something that all golfers struggle with. Golf has so many factors it can be nearly impossible when a 20+ MPH wind is introduced. The key is to keep it simple and to take plenty of club.

Very often golfers will try to hit a club harder when playing into the wind. This is actually the exact opposite of what needs to be done. The goal when playing in the wind is to keep it as low as possible and run it onto the green if needed. This eliminates some of the guessing involved and will lead to more consistent play. When a golfer swings harder they are more likely to hit it high with a lot of backspin, this will cause the ball to “balloon” and come up short.

The first key is to take plenty of club when playing into a breeze. Put the ball back in your stance and make an easy swing. This will ensure that the ball is hit low and will keep it out of the wind as much as possible. This can also be practiced on a calm day. While on the range find a 150 yard shot and hit a club that would normally go about 20 yards over the green. Practice making smooth swings with the ball back in your stance  to hit low shots that carry the 150 yards. With some practice this can be an easy shot to play when faced with windy conditions.
