Tiger Makes Equipment Changes

Wednesday, June 17th, 2009

When Tiger Woods won the Memorial last weekend he had some new clubs in the bag. The difference this time is that they were clubs that resembled those he has played in the past. He put an old set of irons back in the bag and a prototype Nike driver, the Dymo 380, that is roughly 80cc’s smaller than his previous driver. He also added several degrees of loft to the driver. These changes allowed him to hit 87.5% of the fairways for the week, when Tiger does that he is pretty hard to beat.

These changes may be a sign of change in golf equipment. Taylormade released the popular R9 driver this spring which comes in at 420cc’s. Companies may be finding that the smaller heads are more playable and start offering more models well under the 460cc limit imposed by the USGA.
