Tiger returns to form

Friday, August 27th, 2010

The FEDEX Cup kicked off this week at the Barclays. Tiger Woods, newly single, seems to have regained his confidence and his swing on the course with six-under par round yesterday. It has always been a questions of when, not if,  Tiger will make his return and win again. During his struggles there certainly have been some changes of the landscape on the PGA Tour. With Tiger out of the picture for most of the year, young players were able to gather confidence and prove that kids can now compete with seasoned professionals. If Tiger can return to his form from several years ago those players may lose that confidence rather quickly.

With the Ryder Cup coming up it is a great time for Tiger Woods to start dominating again. Tiger has always been fantastic in the singles competition at the Ryder Cup and with the uprising of European talent the Unites States will need every point possible.

PGA Heartbreaker

Sunday, August 15th, 2010

The final major of the year did not disappoint. With a chance to win Dustin Johnson’s twist of fate, and a two stroke penalty, left him wondering what may have been. In the end it came down to Bubba Watson and Martin Kaymer. Two players well known within the golfing world. Kaymer took the title to become the third foreigner to win a major this year, Mickelson was the lone American with his win at the Masters. The golfing world has really entered a new era. Players from all over the world are not only winning tournaments, they are winning majors. It shows what a truly global game golf has become and is most certainly a sign of things to come. While Tiger and Phil had respectable showings they are certainly falling of the radar in comparison to their usual TV time. Young players from abroad are showing that they can come through in truly historic moments and beat the best in the world. The FEDEX playoffs should bring even more excitement and the Ryder Cup will top it all off. It should be one exciting fall of golf.

Leaders surge, Tiger crashes at Bridgestone

Saturday, August 7th, 2010

Well it seems as though Tiger Woods has hit rock bottom. Turning in his worst 54 hole score in his career at the Bridgestone, shooting 11 over par. Ryan Palmer carded a 63 on Saturday and is currently tied for the lead with Sean O’Hair. With Tiger struggling it appears Phil Mickelson has a terrific opportunity to claim the world number one, but he has not been up to the challenge lately. With the PGA Championship at Whistling Straits next week it is a perfect time for Phil to make his move. If Tiger enters next week playing this way he will have little chance of making the cut. Whistling Straits can be a tough course on a calm day and if the wind starts blowing it can be nearly impossible. It would have been impossible to imagine this scenario a couple years ago.

Going low on the PGA Tour

Monday, July 26th, 2010

When Tiger was blowing away the competition on the PGA Tour many were calling for tougher courses. Now it seems that everyone is going low, even with the new grooves on the wedges. With Goydos shooting 59, Ryo Ishikawa shooting a 58, Stricker a 60, and McIlroy firing a 63 in the British Open it seems that now would be a good time to start talking about making courses more difficult. The majors are really the only time we see the leaders struggle. It is certainly fun to watch a bunch of birdies it adds more to the competition if there is a little struggle involved. Over the next couple of years I would not be surprised to see some additional changes in equipment as well. The USGA seems to be scrambling to make up ground to keep things difficult and the groove rule did not do that much to help.

Tiger still chilly

Thursday, July 8th, 2010

It appears that Tiger Woods still has some learning do to. After a rather icy interview after the final round at the Master’s drew some criticism one would think that he may realize that he needs to be a little more courteous until this whole mess blows over. It seems evident that his on course behavior will not change and his attitude toward the press will not either. As long as he continues to struggle we may hear less and less about him at the big tournaments. While being one of the best golfers of all time is not easy he has put himself in this situation with countless mistakes. It seems as though he would warm up to the questions about his play and how everything is playing a role in his comeback. Going in to the British Open next week there are few signs of a strong showing but this is Tiger Woods we are talking about so who knows. It would just be nice if he matured a little in his responses to questions.

Goydos Cards 59

Thursday, July 8th, 2010

Paul Goydos joined a very exclusive club on Thursday carding a 59 in the first round. The bad news is that he only has a one shot lead over Steve Stricker. The scores were extremely low at the John Deere and Goydos was a full 19 shots ahead of the last place golfer. While many of the Tour regulars are at the Barclay’s Scottish Open a strong field stayed at home for the John Deere. Given the first round scores there is a possibility of some record scoring in this weeks tournament.

Watson finally gets a win

Sunday, June 27th, 2010

Bubba Watson outlasted Corey Pavin and Scott Verplank to win the Traveler’s Championship Sunday. Watson, who has been knocking on the door for years finally claimed his first win on the PGA Tour. The long hitting Watson was up against two very experienced veterans and was able to close the deal on the second playoff hole. Perhaps the fact that Corey Pavin was in a playoff for the win is as much a story as Bubba getting the victory. Pavin, like Tom Watson before him, have shown that the elder statesmen of golf can still compete on the big stage.

Pebble Beach winning at U.S. Open

Friday, June 18th, 2010

Just like previous years the course is certainly getting the better of the players. The USGA certainly has not disappointed in setting up the course for the championship. While Ernie Els and Graeme McDowell turned in a pair of 68’s many of the big names continue to struggle. Mickelson still can’t seem to get rolling and Tiger fired a one over 72 on Friday. Chances are the tournament winner will be over par so they are certainly still in the mix.

Heartbreak at the St. Jude

Sunday, June 13th, 2010

Professional golfers wait and work their entire lives to be put in the position Robert Garrigus had at the St. Jude Classic. Leading by three shots with one hole to play it looked as though he would lock up his first win on the big stage, seven strokes later he was in a playoff. Moments like this can do one of two things, destroy some one or make them more resilient. The fact the Garrigus stuck around for an interview after losing the playoff speaks volumes about his character. Most players run and hide from the press following a disaster like this. Hopefully Garrigus will bounce back and get the win he certainly deserves.

At stake at the U.S. Open

Thursday, June 10th, 2010

This may one of the most influential U.S. Open tournaments and one of the most difficult to win. With young players finally stepping up and showing they can win the veterans have some serious competition. With Tiger Woods slowly getting back to his top form it remains to be seen if you is ready to win a major. Given the way Tiger has prepared for majors in the past, and how badly he must want this one, we would have to say he has a great chance of being near the top. The new and improved Phil Mickelson has continued his strong play and seems ready to make a play at the number one spot.

The PGA Tour is the most evenly balanced since Tiger Woods came on tour and started dominating. Each week there are a host of players that can legitimately be considered contenders. In the past it may have just been a few. The U.S. Open is setting up to be a guessing game and exciting watch.
