For the last decade golf fans have been speculating who the next superstar would be. It now seems that there is a group that is combining efforts. The depth of talent on the current tour is quite amazing. Players from all corners of the world are showing they can play with anyone, including Tiger and Phil. There is little doubt that Tiger will return to greatness one day but it remains to be seen if he can ever be as dominant as he once was. There are countless players that are simply better than anyone Tiger has faced in the past. It seems as though the passing of the torch is happening, and it is from Tiger to the rest of the field.

When Tiger was blowing away the competition on the PGA Tour many were calling for tougher courses. Now it seems that everyone is going low, even with the new grooves on the wedges. With Goydos shooting 59, Ryo Ishikawa shooting a 58, Stricker a 60, and McIlroy firing a 63 in the British Open it seems that now would be a good time to start talking about making courses more difficult. The majors are really the only time we see the leaders struggle. It is certainly fun to watch a bunch of birdies it adds more to the competition if there is a little struggle involved. Over the next couple of years I would not be surprised to see some additional changes in equipment as well. The USGA seems to be scrambling to make up ground to keep things difficult and the groove rule did not do that much to help.

If history has taught us anything it is that people have a hard time hanging on to win majors. Ricky Barnes at the U.S. Open in 2009 and Aaron Baddeley are just two guys who had substantial leads going into or during the final round of a major and could not hold on. Pressure just seems to get the best of anyone not named Tiger or Phil and this does not help one Louis Oosthuizen. While he is an accomplished player he has nothing in his resume to match the pressure of the British Open, at St. Andrews as well. Given the fact that this will be his first Sunday round at the British Open the odds are certainly stacked against him. He can also take away wins by other golfers, Graeme McDowell for instance, that prove that it is possible for newbies to rise to the occasion. The fact is that fields at major championships are incredibly strong these days and even the amateurs are posting good results. Anyone in the field has the potential to win the title and change their lives.
While there is no doubt that Louis is stirring in his hotel room at this very moment, trying to get to sleep, we may be seeing a new breed of golfer coming through the ranks. Rory has shown that there is some new blood in town and perhaps golfers such as Osthuizen are realizing they have the ability to compete in majors as well. It looks like it will be a great final round and from past results anyone within ten shots may have a chance when the pressure hits on the back nine.
